Chapter five · A guide for Ahwatukee

What happens when I seek care?

You can arrive with a question, rather than a product choice.

Before the visit: describe the concern

Put the main question at the top of a page. Bring the names of medicines you already use and any treatment that has been proposed.

A note is enough. You do not need to learn a whole new vocabulary before speaking with someone.

Assessment: more than choosing from a menu

The Federation of State Medical Boards adopted guidance in May 2026 saying that choosing from a treatment menu, by itself, falls short of the care standard.

This is a national group of state medical boards. It offers advice for those boards to use. The advice itself is not a law; each state’s rules decide what can be enforced.

The guidance also calls for patients to be able to contact their clinician with questions after the visit.

Tests: ask what a result would change

Telehealth means care from another place, often over a screen. In advice about these visits, the medical boards say the prescriber must decide whether tests or an examination in person are needed. When those tests or an examination are needed, the prescriber must arrange them or refer the patient to someone able to do so.

Ask, “What are you looking for, and how would the result change the care we discuss?”

Ask whether the test charge is separate from the visit.

Plan: leave with clear next steps

Ask the clinician to explain the proposed medicine, why it fits the concern and what follow-up would involve.

Before agreeing to a service, ask who will answer a question afterward and how you would reach them.
